Insulated Jackets

Insulation works best when used in layers and consists of at least two of the following: a base layer, a mid-layer, and outer layer garment. An outer layer could be either an insulation jacket or a waterproof, or both, depending on the weather and temperature of course.

Outer layer insulation garments normally comprise of a down or synthetic jackets or gilets. The whole system of layering is designed to keep you warm and comfortable by trapping the air around your body but the layering system also works well for managing body temperature, or cooling off when working hard: if you get hot, you take a layer off, when you cool down, you put a layer back on – it’s that simple.

Insulation jackets employ either synthetic materials such as Primaloft, or natural fibers such as goose down, both trap warm air in pretty much the same way. Down jackets are generally warmer and more compressible for their size and weight, but synthetic jackets are great in damp conditions.
